Case study introduction

The challenge

Making the game understandable

Optio combines points, deals and coupons. The challenge was to make participation, progress and competition understandable within the app, so people could see how a deal worked and what to do next.

Search and browse the app’s automotive deal categoryEarn and transfer points, with rewards and purchases in the profileBrowse coupons, view a coupon and claim a purchased coupon

The approach

A rubric before the redesign

We assessed the existing experience against a defined gamification rubric. The redesign then addressed the gaps in participation, progress, feedback and guidance.

The five gamification criteria and their three scoring bandsThe anonymous audit score, one out of five

The experience

A control for each deal state

The deal screen uses a control that changes with its state: register, registered, bid and add points. A label also explains what the countdown is counting.

Registration, registered, bid and add-points participation states

More ways to take part

The redesigned experience added draw and sealed-deal concepts alongside the existing deal formats. Each format has its own participation rules and outcome states.

Sealed deal and draw screens with correctly clipped phone framesThe redesigned win and lose outcomes with their next actionsOriginal claim screen with sample contact details beside the redesigned shop claim flow

Guidance in context

Guidance moved into a tutorial over the real interface, introducing an idea at a time. An assistant drawn from the wordmark connects the guidance to Optio’s identity.

All seven in-app tutorial steps with enlarged instructional cards

The outcome

The design brings participation controls, progress feedback and guidance into a consistent interaction language.
